Program Summary

The author identifies seven reasons or factors that complicate the diagnosis of oral and dental pain.

1. The clinicians' insufficient application of biologic principals in dental practice.
2. Heavy reliance on technical and inadequate diagnostic tests.
3. The variance of Patient's pain threshold.
4. The anatomic density of oral-maxillofacial structures may cause intermingling of the signs and patterns of pain
5. Lack of correlation between pain and pathology.
6. The Radiographic findings do not correlate with Pathologic findings.
7. Overlapping and mixing of Pulpal and Periodontal Pathologies.

Fortunately, 90% of the Patient's oral and dental pains encountered in dental practice are "Toothaches." Therefore, the author recommends two clinical approaches for making accurate diagnosis of Dental pain. The first requires understanding of the anatomic and pathologic basis of dental pain, selecting specific tests, identifying and taking account of the above seven influencing factors. The second approach embraces Walden Bell's advice: "A good rule for any Examiner is to consider all pains about the mouth and face to be of dental origin. A Toothache until proven otherwise."

Learning the unit content empowers practicing dental hygienists with the academic knowledge and diagnostic skills to converse with and educate patients, collaborate with dentists to deliver quality dental care effectively.

Educational Objectives

The content of unit two is organized to accomplish the following objectives:

1. List the seven reasons that complicate the diagnosis of oral and dental pain.
2. Describe the normal and abnormal diagnostics of the 10 ADI
3. Explain how do tooth sensibility and toothache occurs as explained by the hydrodynamic theory
4. Identify the factors that Influence the Patient's pain threshold.

Target Audience

The target audience for this course is Dental Hygienists and Dentists from novice to advanced. No prerequisites required.

Dr. Abou-Rass brings nearly fifty years of cutting edge innovations in the field of endodontics and dental education. He pioneered the concept teaching molar versus central teeth as the best sequence for learning endodontic skills and developed the critical error approach to clinical performance evaluation.

In clinical endodontics, Dr. Abou-Rass has made a number of significant new concept and methodology contributions including:

• Anti-curvature filing method
• 4R Operational Diagnosis Protocol
• Composite Post and Core buildup protocol
• Endodontic Treatment Finalization Protocol
• Interim Endodontic Therapy for native bone regeneration before implant placement

In addition to his DDS, Dr. Abou-Rass holds a Master’s degree in Dental Science in Prosthodontics , a certificate in Endodontics and a Ph.D., in Higher Education from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Abou-Rass served as Endodontic Department Chairman and Director of the Advanced Endodontic program at the University of Southern California, School of Dentistry (1971-2000). Dr. Abou-Rass moved to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2000, where he directed the AEGD program at PAADI from 2000 to 2012.

Currently he is USC Professor Emeritus and publisher of Dental Economics MENA Journal and CEMENAOnline.com.
